Courses

Master Molder 1 — 10 Days

Offered approximately twice per quarter.

This 10-day certificate course focuses on the best practices of process development, documentation, and duplication that should be used on any mold in any machine in any location to support the Lean Six Sigma initiatives. This is not necessarily so you can “run machines” but is the best way to achieve the required level of understanding for all those involved in the tasks or the management of injection molding. How to build the best process in the least amount of time and evaluate the process and processor. Each day involves some participative classroom time, daily quizzes, and hands-on time with the molds and machines. There are 10 hours of final exams during the last two days to confirm the effective transfer of the critical knowledge and skills of part design, molds, materials, equipment, and DeCoupledSM 2 Processing. A good understanding of shop math is required.

Intro to Injection Molding — 2 Days

Discover the fundamentals of injection molding in this comprehensive introductory course. Designed for those new to the field, Intro to Injection Molding provides an overview of the process, equipment, and materials involved in creating precision-molded parts.

Through engaging lectures and hands-on demonstrations, participants will explore:

  • The principles of injection molding and its applications.

  • Key components of injection molding machines and how they work.

  • The properties of common plastics and how they influence part design.

  • Best practices for quality control and troubleshooting common issues.

Whether you're starting a career in manufacturing, seeking to improve your technical knowledge, or simply curious about this fascinating process, this course will give you a strong foundation to build upon. No prior experience required — just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm!

Intro to Automation – 2 Days

Step into the world of automation with this beginner-friendly course designed to demystify the building blocks of automated systems. Intro to Automation covers the essentials of relays, power supplies, switches, and basic electrical concepts, providing a solid foundation for anyone interested in understanding or working with automation technologies.

Participants will learn:

  • How relays function and their role in automation systems.

  • The fundamentals of power supplies and their applications.

  • Different types of switches and how they are used in control circuits.

  • Basic principles of electricity and safety practices.

Ideal for beginners or those looking to refresh their knowledge, this course combines theoretical concepts with practical demonstrations, empowering you to take the first steps toward mastering automation. No prior experience is required!

Design of Experiments for Process Development — 3 Days

Offered approximately twice per year.

This three-day course includes working in teams to actually build a DeCoupled process, design the experiment (the right way), run the samples, measure the parts, enter the data into Minitab, and review the results.

The injection molding process does not comply well with the standard DOE-type rules. For example, randomizing the trials is not practical whenever temperatures are used as a factor. Also changing one parameter/factor on the injection molding machine affects many things and can violate our fundamental processing rules. Everything becomes an interaction.

Most often people use a DOE-type study to find what parameters to use to “make the right size part.” Often, this results in a “bad” process that does not comply with the DeCoupled Molding rules and is not as stable. DOE should not be used to develop a process. It should only be used on a fully capable process and never sacrificing the Six Sigma (DeCoupled) methodology.

There are two ideal ways to qualify for the course, but exceptions have been made.

You are a certified Master Molder 1 with some DOE and Minitab experience.

You are a certified Black Belt and have passed an RJG DeCoupled Molding course such as: Systematic Molding, Systematic Molding for Tooling Engineers, Strategies for Successful New Tool Transfers, or Master Molder 1.

Intro to Mold Setting — 1 Day

Learn the essential skills for safely and effectively installing molds into injection molding machines in Intro to Mold Setting. This course emphasizes safety, precision, and best practices to protect both yourself and your equipment while ensuring optimal performance.

Through a combination of instruction and hands-on practice, participants will:

  • Understand the step-by-step process of mold installation.

  • Recognize the importance of proper setup to prevent equipment damage and production issues.

  • Identify signs of compromised or faulty equipment and take corrective action.

  • Master safe crane operation and lifting techniques for heavy loads.

Designed for those new to mold setting or seeking to refine their skills, this course provides the knowledge and confidence needed to perform this critical task with care and accuracy. Safety is always the top priority!
