Packaging Capabilities

Bringing consumer packaged goods brands to life

Jabil Packaging Solutions provides consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands with custom injection molding and paper packaging services. We enable food and beverage, personal care and home care brands to win on the shelf and online. Purposeful innovation, advanced conversion capabilities and best-in-class manufacturing practices are just some of the drivers that enable us to co-develop game-changing rigid plastic and fiber-based packaging for our customers.

Our customers benefit from packaging solutions based on market research that brings us closer to what consumers want — and more importantly, what they need. By understanding consumer behaviors, we keep our customer packaging ahead of key trends. Customers leverage our design, engineering and manufacturing excellence to bring exciting, new packaging concepts to market quickly and efficiently.

How We Solve Your Toughest Packaging Challenges

Packaging Design

Our tenured designers act as extensions of your team, considering changing consumer behavior and transforming that information into innovations that disrupt marketplaces and attract new consumers. We can take a back of the napkin drawing, turn it into a concept, and advance it through testing, validation, and production — all under one roof. Leverage our design experts for real-time brainstorming sessions, hand-drawn sketches, alternative material recommendations, verbal description development, CAD mock-ups and more, with a focus on Design for Manufacturing.

Once the field of ideas has been narrowed to a few, high impact concepts, we begin to refine the details with the development of packaging prototypes that can be tested through a variety of different technical processes, including mold flow analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), and CT scanning. A single cavity tool is developed to verify mold performance and ensure the part performs exactly to spec. Prototype molds can be tested across any of Jabil’s North American or European facilities.

Tooling and Mold Making

Jabil Packaging Solutions engineering organization provides brands with holistic molding and tooling services, ranging from prototype mold building and industrial mold building to in-house maintenance and repair. Our molding and tooling customers receive industry-leading part consistency, material conservation and efficiency, plus the peace of mind that their molds can be adapted and tweaked as product designs change.

We offer a variety of injection molding solutions, including stack molding, servo molds, and in-mold closing, for tethered closures.

Packaging Automation

Jabil Packaging Solutions provides automation project management, starting from prototype development and extending all the way to industrial line automation. Customers can work with Jabil to design bespoke solutions for unique product formats or test custom automations during Design for Manufacturing. When an external automation is required, customers can trust us to handle the IMM integration with ease.

Assembly

Jabil Packaging Solutions provides assembly services such as continuous motion systems, linear index systems, and manual assembly, where applicable. Continuous motion assembly machines offer extreme consistency and alignment and may be the optimal choice for more complex plastic pieces such applicators, pump and dispensers, syringes, child safety closures, flip top closures or sports closures. Linear index systems ensure that the most complex assemblies are processed efficiently, from pick-and-place, screwdriving, and dispensing to crimping, pressing, and ultrasonic welding.

Material Science

As a flexible, high-velocity partner that meets specialized materials requirements, we help customers improve how they design, make, and deliver products. Our experts in barrier packaging ensure that your product stays safe, clean, and dry while packaged. We work to find the right combination of coatings and layers to ensure that your product performs as expected and stays protected for as long as possible. With sustainability in mind, we’ve also developed hybrid packaging solutions that meet performance demands.

Our Injection Molding Solutions

Is brand equity and shelf presence the priority? Or is plastic reduction, recyclability and the use of alternative resins more important to your customers? At Jabil Packaging Solutions, we specialize in realizing our customers’ packaging visions, no matter how complex the design or daunting the volume requirements.

Multi-Layer/Co-injection

Co-injection is the controlled application of an EVOH layer to a package, resulting in water and oxygen barrier properties. This technology is particularly useful for caps and closures, as it provides precise control over the barrier size and location and enables barrier-capable parts with more advanced geometry than thermoforming. This technology is increasingly used to eliminate liners, seals and foil barriers that have traditionally been required in healthcare, consumer cosmetics and even food and beverage products.

Jabil Packaging Solutions provides scalable co-injection solutions so brands can meet specific performance requirements and appeal to customers. Our team of experienced designers helps avoid quality problems before they arise, reducing risk and delays in production.

Injection Compression Molding

We leverage injection compression molding to produce low-weight parts and help brands reduce the cost and improve the sustainability of their product. This technology injects resin while the mold is still open. When the injection molding machine (IMM) closes, it applies the final clamping force to compress the part. This technique achieves a very thin wall that can’t be matched by the standard injection process. The Jabil team is well-versed in the nuanced mold design requirements that enable this process. Our team can also offer design recommendations to ensure the lighter, thinner packaging meets all performance and aesthetic requirements.

In-Mold Labeling

In-mold labeling is a technique used to fuse pre-printed graphics to packages during the molding process. The result is a high-quality and highly functional label that is permanently bonded to a package. The label is much like any other label, but in the IML process, it is bonded and formed into a wide variety of sizes and shapes using materials like plastics, biopolymers, paper or paperboard. Partnering with a manufacturer like Jabil to implement IML helps brands add value through the quality of product design, the scalability of production, and the sustainability of a lighter weight product.

Fiber Molding

Traditional paperboard containers are laminated with materials such as plastic and aluminum to provide the barrier properties needed to protect the product inside a package. Unfortunately, these composite designs make packaging virtually impossible to recycle at scale. To promote and facilitate recycling at end of life, Jabil Packaging Solutions separates the plastic and paper from each other.

While we still need plastic to provide barrier, we allow fiber to play a larger role in proving the structural integrity that a package needs. Using molded fiber, and not paperboard, provides much greater freedom in terms of the shapes that are available to designers. Compound surfaces, curved shapes, and easy-grip solutions for large bottles are all possible with molded fiber. Our customers can leverage a wider range of feedstock due to the hybrid design of our products, which separate the recycled fiber shell from the product within the inner plastic liner.

No matter how complex or demanding the project, Jabil Packaging Solutions can help you solve it.
